The Ginkgo.
The ginkgo was one of my father’s favorite trees. He was a professional landscaper, and I was raised on my parents’ tree nursery. My father was gentle in appearance and temperament, yet with great physical strength and endurance, very much like a ginkgo tree.
Ginkgo trees have been on our planet since the Jurassic Period, millions of years ago! Their resilience, and their beauty speaks volumes to me. They have a delicate appearance with beautifully unique leaves–yet, ginkgo trees have survived earthquakes, fires, and even the atomic bomb. About a mile from the 1945 drop on Hiroshima, springtime leaves emerged from six severely damaged ginkgo trees–an amazing and rare sign of life amidst catastrophic destruction. These trees, still living today, embody resilience and hope against man’s most destructive efforts. What an inspiration!
